Nutrition

Protein

We suggest getting protein to target through whole, unprocessed foods wherever possible.

If you do use a supplement, look for one with a single ingredient and no other additives. It is being taken for health, not for taste.

Avoid on the label:

  • Refined oils, such as sunflower or canola
  • Sunflower lecithin and soy lecithin
  • Emulsifiers
  • Artificial flavors and artificial colors
  • Nature-identical substances
  • Sweeteners: stevia, monk fruit, sucralose, erythritol, maltodextrin, fructooligosaccharides

The long-term effects of those sweeteners on insulin secretion, gut health, cravings, and inflammation are not known.

If you have lactose intolerance or digestive trouble with whey concentrate, a whey isolate may suit you better. Plant-based supplements are generally less palatable, especially the ones without sweeteners, emulsifiers, or flavoring agents.

Fasting support

If you have any medical condition, consult your healthcare professional first. This page does not substitute a professional evaluation to make sure you are nutritionally and medically ready for fasting.

Psyllium husk provides soluble fibre. It expands when soaked in water and can create a sensation of fullness. Some people use it as support when getting started.

Eventually the aim is water-only fasting, which is where the benefit for improving insulin resistance, fat burn, and autophagy is greatest.

Low-carb flours

Almond flour is a good low-carb substitute. Patients use it to modify familiar recipes and to try new ones.

Coconut milk is used in many traditional Indian recipes. When you make it at home, the pulp left behind can be dried into coconut flour.

Some patients make roti with a low-carb atta.

Supplements

Supplements

Magnesium. A normal magnesium blood level does not rule out low magnesium. You can see whether a magnesium glycinate supplement helps with poor sleep, low mood, muscle pain, or low energy.

Creatine. Useful if you are strength training regularly.

  • Makes more quick-burst energy available in the muscle, so you can lift heavier
  • Does not build endurance, and does nothing if you are not training
  • Expect some weight gain in the first few weeks, mostly water at first
  • Look for creatine monohydrate. A good one dissolves easily in water
  • Found in animal protein, so vegetarians and anyone not eating meat daily are the most likely to need it
  • Stay well hydrated while taking it
